The LCQM (Liverpool Counts Quality Mark) is a city wide initiative designed to raise the profile of numeracy and maths and inspire our young people to enjoy mathematics. All of the staff at FHS are working hard to instil a sense of positivity in our pupils towards maths and encourage them to appreciate that maths is going to be a very important feature of their daily lives as adults.
The aim of the Quality mark is to tackle the negative attitudes in society towards numeracy and mathematics. We want to promote a culture where people understand the impact good numeracy skills and mathematics qualifications can have on the social, health and employment aspects of their lives. We also aim to support adults in schools to encourage pupils to make connections in their lessons to real life contexts and with other areas of their school experiences.
In order to change attitudes towards mathematics in our wonderful city we all need to work together; teachers, pupils, dinner ladies, teaching assistants, caretakers, governors, and perhaps most importantly parents need to talk positively about maths with young people and help them to understand that just accepting that you are ‘bad’ at maths is not OK.
Have you ever heard the phrase “I was terrible at maths at school, I’ll never be able to do maths”? Maybe you’ve said it yourself? Don’t accept that view point - CHALLENGE IT! Everyone can succeed in mathematics if they are motivated and persistent. We should never give up on ourselves, and especially on our children; we can do it and they can do it!
