World Challenge: It's a Jungle Out There!
In October, we decided to make a difference and take part in the biggest challenge of our lives… Over fifteen of our pupils from Years 10, 11 and 12 have enrolled to take part in an expedition programme to Zambia and Malawi in 2012. Our expedition will be the culmination of a skills development programme run by World Challenge. The 3 week expedition will be preceded by 18-20 months of preparation and planning by all team members, which will involve each taking on board the responsibility of fundraising £3,495 each to take part!
World Challenge is 100% educationally focused. The exciting programme offers school pupils the opportunity of a lifetime, whilst helping them to learn and gain new skills, including the management of money; decision making; learning from mistakes; leadership skills and working as a team. All their expeditions incorporate their ethos of challenge, environment and participation. Whilst in Africa, they will immerse themselves in the local culture and community, doing local walks; trekking up vast mountainsides; experiencing the wild animal life on safaris and, most importantly, they will be taking part in local community projects. This could be anything from digging wells or irrigation ditches to teaching children in schools or painting buildings. Pupils have already shown great motivation to raise the money they need: some of their fundraising efforts include cake sales, school discos, collections and bag packs.
