In an effort to address the current gender imbalance in Resistant Materials and Engineering, Mr Wood organised a guest speaker to host a workshop with year 8 girls.
The guest speaker, Jodie Marlow, is a qualified architectural technician working alongside LJMU to help encourage females into the engineering industry.
The girls responded really well and enjoyed the challenge of having to design and make a strong structure using only straws and tape.
The winning model was chosen by Leigh Nixon who is a year 11 pupil studying Engineering.
Demi Wilson and Elle Newman who took part in the activity both thoroughly enjoyed the session and agreed that it opened their minds about what subjects to choose if deciding to follow a design and make based career. Demi's views were changed about Resistant Materials being a 'boys only' subject and Elle has since decided to choose Engineering for one of her options.
