2012 Open Evening - Our Best Yet!
A huge ‘Thank you’ to all the parents and year 5 and 6 pupils who braved the stormy weather on the 26th September to attend our annual Open Evening. As the Head, Mrs Rourke said, it was “Definitely the best yet.”
The rain outside did not dampen the warm and friendly atmosphere inside the building; as always, the school was buzzing and our visitors were able to wander round the departments of the school seeing how a successful school like ours works.
There was so much to see and do: in DT there were delicious crumpet pizzas to sample or visitors could try their hands at re-designing the school uniform in Textiles. Many visitors went away with a customised ruler created on the school laser cutter in Engineering. In Art they could make a clay nameplate or have a go at creating a comic; in Maths there were puzzles galore and interactive Maths quiz games on the Smart boards.
In Media, the room was awash with music from the A Level pop videos being shown on the huge screen while across the corridor in Music there were keyboards and interactive music programmes to try out and dance videos to watch.
In Science as always it was a case of Bang! Pop! Fizz! as some highly dramatic experiments were demonstrated.
Teachers were on hand to answer queries and a veritable army of pupils acted as cheerful, helpful and informative tour guides. Mrs Rourke addressed the parents of our prospective pupils in the Hall welcoming them to the family of FHS. It was standing room only as the hall was full to capacity. Assistant head, Mr Scott, who organises the Open Evening each year, was delighted to see so many pupils from our local primary schools and declared the turnout was “Fantastic!” He also praised the hard work and dedication of our own staff and pupils who contributed so much to making the evening such a resounding success.
