Engineering at Jaguar Land Rover

Fazakerley High Schools specialism in Engineering means we have great links with local industry.

Many of our pupils have enjoyed visits, work placements and summer schools with the UK’s largest luxury vehicle manufacturer, Jaguar Land Rover.

Jaguar Land Rover's Halewood Operations Advanced Manufacturing Centre is world renowned for lean manufacturing excellence and employs over 4,000 people, including those on its apprentice and graduate programme.

Apprenticeship Success

One of our 2017 leavers, Isabelle studied BTEC Engineering in school and secured a prestigious 4 year apprenticeship at Jaguar Land Rover. Isabelle's strong academic record and in depth knowledge of engineering set her up on the right path for success.

Isabella explained: “My teachers and family, who are all in engineering-related careers, encouraged me to apply. I am really enjoying my apprenticeship so far. I have taken part in interesting jobs such as bench fitting, machinery and welding. The people I work with also make the job very enjoyable as we all get on great and work well together. I am looking forward to getting into plant in the next few months and getting more involved in my role as a toolmaker."

Inspiring Young Engineers programme

Some of our year 10 & 11 pupils attended a special two-day course aimed at ‘Inspiring Young Engineers’ during the school holidays.

The course included a guided tour of the Halewood factory and a selection of hands-on activities designed to strengthen team building and engineering skills.  Pupils also had the opportunity to visit specialist areas of the Halewood production process and meet Jaguar Land Rover apprentices and engineering staff to find out more about the world of work.

Congratulations to the following pupils who attended the course Egons, Lewis, Sam, Joe, Elliott and Ashnip.

Work Experience

One of our current year 11 pupils Sam enjoyed spending a week on placement at Jaguar Land Rover.

Sam benefited from vital Health and Safety training and orientation, observing the different roles within the factory and placement evaluation all of which will help him prepare for the world of work.

Sam had this to say about his experience "I enjoyed my time on work experience with Jaguar Land Rover. I particularly enjoyed learning more about how the factory operates, observing production of the Range Rover Evoque from start to finish was mesmerising. The experience I gained has given me the confidence to apply for the apprenticeship programme this year."

JLR Halewood will soon start recruiting students interested in STEM careers for Spring and Summer placements.

Mr Wood, Engineering teacher at Fazakerley High has this to say about student experiences at Jaguar Land Rover. "We have a long standing history of working with Jaguar Land Rover, we have engaged with them on a variety of programmes and visits, it’s great for pupils to see first-hand how the engineering knowledge and skills gained in school can be applied in a real world context."

"I believe the skills and knowledge pupil’s gain from the BTEC Engineering course gives them a competitive advantage in the engineering industry, and sets them up for a successful career."
