Students Experience Parenthood
Students studying BTEC Level 2 Children’s Play, Learning and Development recently got to experience first-hand what it is like to be a parent of a new-born baby.
They each were given a Life Choice Baby to look after for the weekend and it was certainly an enlightening experience for all of the students concerned.
Each student will receive a report which gives them an overview of their performance as a parent and also details how well the baby was rocked, fed, burped and changed as well as how many times the baby was handled incorrectly.
Some of the students vowed that the experience had put them off having children for many years as they hadn’t realised the true demands of the role. Others got so attached to their babies that they bought clothes for them and took them out for walks in prams they borrowed from family members.
Students will study many different aspects of childcare during the course including patterns of child development, promoting positive behaviour, language and literacy development and making healthy food choices.
The students look forward to caring for the babies again in the future to see how much their skills have developed.
